Insulin-mediated biochemical pathways lead to enhanced vascular smooth muscle proliferation, platelet adhesiveness and vasoconstriction. Insulin causes the cells of the body to take in glucose from the blood. The glucose is used as fuel for cellular functions. Insulin is a hormone which regulates the level of glucose (sugar) in the blood stream. Glucose serves as a vital source of energy for all organs in the body and is the only source of energy that can be utilized by the brain.
Insulin is a hormone - a substance of vital importance that is made by your pancreas. Insulin acts like a key to open the doors into your cells, letting sugar (glucose) in. Insulin bonds to a receptor site on the outside of a cell. It acts like a key to open a doorway into the cell through which glucose can enter. Insulin is vital to patients with type I diabetes. Without insulin, patients with type I diabetes can develop severely elevated blood sugar levels.
